How Do You Know What Lock Products Will Be Best For Your Home?

We understand that choosing lock products for your home can be a difficult, but important decision. The lock products you choose should effectively keep unwanted people out of your home. Regardless of the type of locks you choose, you will want to make sure they offer you great protection in keeping your home safe. If you live in an area where you need additional safety or protection, you will want to take that into consideration when you are choosing the locks you need. Thieves will use any kind of entry method they can to break into homes. Your locks should offer you the best level of protection for you and your family.

Your Doorknob/Door Handle

Door HandleDoor handles can in a wide variety of styles. The door handle you choose should properly fit your door. A door handle isn’t always a square or round knob. The door handle can also be a lever lock, which is basically a combination of a handle and a thumb latch. If you are preparing to replace or just upgrade your door handle, you will want to choose the best product that can give you security and the functionality you are hoping for. Whatever handle you choose to have, it should be one that locks.

Deadbolt Locks

deadboltA deadbolt can offer you great protection and security. Deadbolts are also one of the top recommendations by the security experts because of their ability to withstand anyone trying to pick the lock. A double cylinder deadbolt will require you to have a key that is to be used either inside or outside. If you have a single cylinder deadbolt, it can be manipulated. If your door has glass anywhere, someone can gain entry by breaking the glass and unlocking the bolt.

When you consider the door handles and locks that you need, security should be the number one reason. The look and finish of the products can be taken into consideration, but security should be the priority. The lock you choose for your door should properly fit with the door. It your lock is not equipped for your door, it will be easier for someone to break into your home. Nothing can really fully guarantee that someone will not break into your home, but it is a good decision to make sure your doors are secure with great locks.

What to Look for When Choosing a Gun Safe

gun safeBuying a gun safe is a good idea because you can keep your collection safe from thieves, while also limiting access to them. Not all gun safes are created the same, which is why we are offering tips on what to look for in these safe products.

The doors are of utmost importance because thieves can tamper with poor quality ones. For maximum security, your door should have at least four bolts on each side, in addition to having bolts on the top and bottom. These bolts should be at least 9/16” thick, and made from rustproof materials if you are storing the safe outdoors.

Look for doors that are made from steel and at least 1/4” thick. The frame should be one continuous piece of metal rather than being spot welded, and hinges should not be visible from the outside whenever the door to the safe is closed.

A keyed lock could present a problem in the event you need to get into your safe quickly, because this means you would have to stash a key close by. As a result, intruders could easy get into your safe during a robbery, thereby negating the purpose of it. A combination lock is ideal, provided you don’t forget the combination. If you’re prone to forgetting, a multi-purpose keyed/combination lock would allow you to access it via either method.

The area where you plan to store your safe is also important. For handguns, a small safe that slides underneath your bed would be ideal. If you have a larger collection, you may want to consider a safe that could be placed inside a recessed wall or even the floor. Gun safes can also resemble books or other ordinary objects, and one of these safes would allow you to “hide” your weapons in plain view.

Here at Aaron’s Lock and Key, we have a wide selection of quality gun safes, and are sure to have one that suits your needs perfectly. To see the choices we have available, contact us.

Why Businesses Use Access Control Systems

Why Businesses Use Access Control Systems

access controlAn access control system is a great investment because it separates the public from employees and management employees from workers.

The system does more not than just lock out burglars.  Keys are often forgotten, copied, or dropped; businesses that use access control systems are never at risk because the system does not require a key.  In addition, the system protects confidential information.  Businesses that are not using an access control system are open to espionage and possible errors.

The access control system technology uses bar codes, smart cards, digital cameras, and magnetic striping.  Some systems also use biometric technology.

Three Reasons Why Access Control Systems Are Helpful

Physical keys can be easily duplicated, but the process of duplicating electronic keys requires a certain degree of sophistication.  This makes access systems more secure than security options that use physical keys.

Also, businesses never have to change their locks.  If someone loses a keycard, a technician will remove it from the database immediately, and another keycard will be issued.  In addition, when employees leave the business, their access rights can be removed quickly.

Access control systems only use one key or access code that provides access to every door in the building.  Businesses never worry about forgetting certain keys for specific areas.

In the end, an access control system is a valuable tool that your business can use to greatly increase its security. The peace of mind that comes with knowing that employees and contractors only have access to the areas of your building they need to do their jobs will certainly help you sleep better at night. Contact us when you are ready to get a quote on an access control system for your business.

Choose the Best Deadbolt Lock Products for Your Home

deadboltReplacing the locks on the front and back doors of your home is a valuable investment in safety. Choosing the proper lock products as replacements may also save you money. Many insurance companies offer a discount on homeowners insurance rates if you have deadbolt locks installed.

Deadbolts are the best locks for external doors to your home. There are three types of deadbolts:

  • Single cylinder deadbolts use a key cylinder on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside. They are convenient from the inside of the house, because no key is needed to unlock the door quickly. The downside to these locks is that if there is a way to access the thumb-turn from the outside, such as windows in the door or on the side of the door, then they do not provide much security.
  • Double cylinder deadbolts use a key cylinder on both the outside of the door and the inside of the door. This makes for better security if a window is present. Needing a key to unlock the door can present a problem if a quick exit is necessary. It is recommended that you keep a key in the inside cylinder when you are home and remove that key when you leave the house.
  • Lockable thumb-turn deadbolts are a hybrid of the single and double cylinder locks. It features a thumb-turn on the inside that works like a single cylinder deadbolt, except the thumb-turn can be locked using a key so it cannot lock or unlock the door. If the thumb-turn is locked, then the deadbolt cannot be unlocked even from the inside. The thumb-turn can be left unlocked when you are home with the deadbolt acting like a regular single cylinder lock.

There are two additional steps for security with the installation of the deadbolt. The bar that extends from the deadbolt into your door frame is called a throw. The throw needs to be at least one inch in length. The screws that attach the strike plate to the door frame should be three inches long. This will ensure that the screws go into the frame of the house.

Check with your homeowners insurance company to see which locks they recommend and if they offer a discount on your insurance if you have them installed. Then contact us at Aaron’s Lock and Key. Our expert locksmiths will replace your current locks with the deadbolts that will keep your home secure.

A Guide to Choosing the Right Safe Products

Everyone has a need to store valuable items, but how do you know which safe is best? With so many choices available, finding the right one can be overwhelming at times. Here are some guidelines to use that will help you decide on the right safe products to fit your needs.

safe productsSome guidelines for safes are:

  • Made from at least 12 gauge steel
  • Fire rating of at least one hour
  • Doors with ¼” or thicker solid steel plates

When choosing safes to store other valuables in, consider their burglar ratings. Burglar ratings have been developed by combining manufacturer’s guidelines along with UL ratings, with different ones being ideal for different content values. Here is an overview of the different ratings:

  • B-contents up to $5,000 in value
  • B/C-up to $10,000 in content value
  • U.L. RSC-holds valuables worth up to $15,000
  • C-good for storing items worth as much as $30,000
  • U.L. TL-15, which can guard items valued at up to $200,000
  • U.L. TL-30, ideal for storing things worth as much as $375,000
  • U.L. TL-30X6, good for items valued at up to $1 million
  • U.L. TRTL-30X6, a must for contents worth more than $1 million

A common mistake people make is buying a safe that is insufficient to meet their needs. You’ll likely accumulate even more expensive items over time, which is why you should consider buying a safe that’s one level up from what you currently need.

Paper and Money

When storing important papers or cash, you’ll need a safe with a fire rating of at least one hour. Generally speaking, the more paper you plan to store, the higher your fire rating should be. For added protection, consider getting a floor safe, as the fact that it is encased in concrete will provide added protection.

These are just a few things to consider when buying a safe. Contact us today for more information.

Lost Or Broken Transponder Keys? Have No Fear, A Locksmith Will Be Near!

aaronSecuring your vehicle is probably something you think about at all times. To have adequate measures of security, you have several options. You can invest the necessary amount of money to ensure you are taking the proper security measures. One of the best decisions you can make to secure your vehicle is investing in transponder keys. Our lives can most certainly improved with the amazing technology we are exposed to. Transponder keys are part of the new movement of technology and keys.

Transponder keys can assist you in keeping your vehicles safe. Your transponder key will provide a transmission signal from the key to the lock. This makes your key a high security because it can lower the chance that someone tries to steal your vehicle. The transponder key has a microchip inside of it, and it has a serial number that matches the vehicle you have. The ECU will send a message to your vehicle, and this message basically wants to verify the serial number. If the vehicle does not respond to the serial number, then your vehicle will not turn on.

This sounds like a good system to have in place, right? Losing keys and breaking keys is not something that is uncommon; we have all probably lost a key before. So, what if your transponder key is broken or lost? It can be expensive to get a replacement at the dealership where you purchased the vehicle. Thankfully, locksmiths and lock and key services are able to replace that transponder key at an affordable price.

When you search for the right locksmith to replace your transponder key, you should enlist the services of a locksmith who is qualified and will do the best job possible. Using a locksmith for assistance can provide you with the best service possible, and you can save yourself money and time.

A good thing to keep in mind is having an extra key. The dealer can give you a spare key when you purchase your vehicle. If you are ever in a jam and you need to replace your stolen, broken, or lost transponder key, you can contact a professional locksmith. Hopefully you have better luck than some people, but if you ever need assistance, contact us.

Come prepared for campus life with a personal safe

personal safeIt’s almost time to pack the car and head off to college. While living on campus is an excellent opportunity for students, it is not without dangers as well. Since living in a dormitory requires dozens of strangers to live under the same roof, there is an inherent sense of vulnerability that cannot be escaped. Will the roommate be trustworthy? What happens if someone takes advantage of an unlocked dorm room door?  Where is the best place to store valuables and important documents? Help ease these worries with a safe from Aaron’s Lock and Key.

Depending on the campus housing policies, your child may not have the option to chose a roommate. By protecting important belongings with a personal safe, your child will be able to focus on academics without worrying about what’s happening back in the dorm room while he’s studying in the library. Aaron’s Lock and Key can help you choose a personal safe that will be best appropriate for a dorm room or shared living space.

Even if your child is living with a friend, the structure of dormitories means he will be sharing space with many people; some of which may be untrustworthy. Even if your child is diligent with keeping his room locked, there are a number of people including the Resident Director, Resident Assistant, and other members of the campus housing department that will have access to a master key. Unfortunately, it is far too easy for this to get into the wrong hands. There are plenty of targets in a dormitory. The presence of a personal safe in your child’s dorm room will make it clear to thieves that he is not one of them.

The U.S. Department of Education reported in its last review of campus safety that there are more than 12,000 occurrences of residence hall burglaries every year. Your child has worked hard and deserves an education that will prepare him for success. Don’t let the actions of others hinder this. A personal safe in the dorm room will keep valuables safe and give you the peace of mind that your child is protected. That feeling is worth a fortune.

Why Your Business Should Consider Installing Keyless Access Control Systems

keyless access control systems

If you are a small business owner, you know the security difficulties that come with owning a business. One of the biggest security concerns is who has a key to your business, and how they are using it. Making sure you know who can get in and out of your business is the first step in securing the inventory and records of your business. Suddenly a small key becomes a great responsibility when you are handing it over to an employee. Aaron’s Lock and Key in Madison Heights, MI can help you bring additional security to your business (and your peace of mind) by installing keyless access control systems.

You’ve probably seen these systems on businesses before. These are the numerical keypads you see above doorknobs that grant access to the building when the right code is punched in. So how could your business benefit from one of these systems?

  • You can easily change the access code after an employee leaves. Some businesses have high employee turnover, and there isn’t much you can do about it. But it can cost you an a huge re-keying fee every time an employee leaves. With the keyless entry, you can simply change the code and give the new one to current employees.
  • Never worry about a lost key again. No matter how hard they try, your employees are going to lose or forget their keys once in a while. Now you won’t have to drive down to your building to let them in, and you won’t worry about who found their missing keys and what they might do with them.
  • A keyless entry can reduce your overhead. You won’t have to purchase new keys, replace lost ones, or pay for rekeying services every few months. Once your keyless system is installed, it requires very little maintenance!

Interested in learning more about keyless entry systems for your business? Contact us and we’ll help you find the right system for your door. We’ve been working with businesses like yours for nearly 40 years so you can trust that we have the experience to help with any lock or key. Give us a call today and let us install your new system right away!

Some Common Myths Concerning Transponder Keys Disspelled

transponder keyMost vehicles manufactured after 1995 contain transponder keys, which are keys that contain a transponder chip that must be read before the car is started. Their primary purpose is to deter theft, which is why they are so important. There are a number of myths concerning transponder keys, and we would like to set the record straight on a number of them.

The safety features that require a transponder key can easily be disabled

One of the biggest myths concerning transponder keys involves disabling the safety features that make it necessary to have a transponder key in the first place. Automakers have already considered the possibility that people might try to do this, and have consequently made it very difficult for the average person to accomplish. Even if you had the equipment and knowledge to disable these safety features, it’s not recommended, as doing so could void the warranty in some cases.

You can save money by purchasing transponder keys online

While there are a number of retailers who claim to sell transponder keys, the quality of these keys is usually questionable. What often happens is that people purchase these keys, only to find out they don’t work or to have them break in only a short while. Returning these keys for a refund is sometimes difficult as well. When replacing a transponder key, it’s best to seek out a reputable dealer such as Aaron’s Lock and Key to help you.

Any locksmith can cut transponder keys

It takes a special set of skills to make transponder keys and program them correctly. Not only that, but special equipment is needed as well.

When comparing prices, you should always go with the locksmith that provides the lowest estimate

That’s not necessarily the case, as some locksmiths will only cut your key and not program it, in which case you would have to pay an additional fee to get that service performed.
